Before opening its doors to the public as a hotel, Central Station was- you guessed it- a train station. In 1914, Central Station began its journey as a major railroad stop for the Illinois Central Railroad, and its height of operation delivered more than 50 arrivals and departures a day. The success of Central Station fostered the growth of the surrounding Downtown area to a booming part of town.  However, when the railroad industry declined, Central Station suffered.

In an effort to revitalize Central Station and Downtown Memphis, the city invested 20 million into the South Main neighborhood and Central Station in 1995. With a new breath of life, Central Station once again brought new generations to the South Main neighborhood to create the arts district. Today, Central Station remains an active train station, a stop on the Main Street Trolley line, and an emerging hotel and event venue.

The Central Station renovation project sought to restore the original architecture and marry it with a modern design. The original architecture is styled in the Roman Doric style with a colonnade of Bedford stone.

If you’re just looking for a fun night out, the Bishop restaurant and Eight & Sand Bar are hotspots in the historic South Main Arts District. They boast locally source produce and local wineries to enjoy while listening to their carefully crafted Memphis-inspired vinyl collection.
