Wedding Hairstyles Guide in Memphis

We all know picking makeup and hairstyles for your wedding can be super stressful, especially when you know NOTHING about either one! Over the years, we’ve picked up a few things from working with a couple of different makeup artists and hairstylists. We compiled a one-stop-shop list consisting of local MUAs, HMUAs, and tips to popular hairstylists to add to your Pinterest board!

1. Simple headband:

A dainty, shimmery headband is the perfect accessory on your wedding day. It adds something elegant and extra without going extremely overboard. It screams elegant and timeless without crossing the line. The half-up-half-down look makes this hairstyle versatile to fit any dress silhouette!

3. The Chignon:

A chignon, when done right, is sleek, elegant, and timeless. Make sure it is low, not too big, and not overdone. Even add a small headband to add a little glitz and glamour without looking like you’re on Toddlers and Tiaras.

4. Glamour wave:

This is easy to overdo but elegant when done right. It might be the hairstyle that mostly pushes the line of timeless and too trendy, but we loved this hairstyle too much to leave it out. It gives us that “old Hollywood glam meets 2020” vibe!

5. Low pony:

A low pony is the perfect mixture of a down and updo. It fits almost any wedding dress style and is extremely easy to do if you don’t have the budget for a hairstylist. Combine the cool girl curls with the low pony to get that effortless and timeless look. A deadly combination.

6. Easygoing, messy bun:

The perfect messy bun makes you go “wait how did I just do that?” That’s when you know you did it right! It screams a girl who can be elegant down the aisle but still get down and dirty on the dance floor at the reception. This style is also easy to DIY if you’re looking to stretch your budget!

Tips for Choosing Your Hairstylist & Makeup Artists

  1. Research, research, research!

Stalking potential hairstylists and makeup artists will help you determine how much of your budget to set aside for hair and makeup, which stylists and artists fit that budget, are they a certified MUA? Do they do both hair and makeup or just one service? Do they have good reviews? Does their social media speak to you and your style? These things matter y’all!! Researching local HMUAs will help you answer these burning questions!

2. Choose someone similar to your style and taste!

Again, research will help you find someone whose hair and makeup style is close to your personal taste! Believe it or not, there is a multitude of styles for hair and makeup. Are you going for a soft, natural glam, a more quirky and unique look, or a full face, full glam look? Choosing someone who understands your personal style will make the hair and makeup process so much smoother!

3. Do a trial run!

This is a great way to see if your vision and their execution of your vision line up! Don’t be afraid to speak up if you don’t like something! Give the hairstylist or MUA the opportunity to fix it before moving onto another stylist or MUA! This will save you the stress of finding someone new, and they will totally understand! They are professionals who understand you want to look a certain way at your wedding and will totally fix anything you bring up!

4. Make a Pinterest Board!

This may seem obvious or unnecessary, but it will help you and the MUA or hairstylist visual and pinpoint exactly what you’re looking for! If you’re undecided on how the look you’re going for, Pinterest is a great tool to discover wedding hair and makeup looks! Gather a couple of pictures and show them to help jumpstart the artist’s creativity!!

5.  Reconsider letting your friend or family member do your hair and makeup

Hair and makeup is definitely a vendor where you get what you pay for. Wedding hair stylists and MUAs have been trained and experience to know how to apply makeup, do intricate hairstyles, make sure it looks good in certain lighting/pictures, have higher-end products, knows how to match foundation shades, etc. A friend or family member (while maybe highly skilled) may not understand the ins and outs of special event hair and makeup!

In the end, the best tip anyone can give you on your wedding day is to just be YOU! Whatever makeup choices or hairstyle you choose (or none at all, your choice!) or whatever the budget, you’ll rock it because you chose it, and confidence shines most of all! In the words of Brad Mondo himself, “go and live your most extra life!”
